Languedoc covers roughly the region between the Rhône and the Aude River, extending northwards to the Cévennes and the Massif Central.
Languedoc derives from Occitan (French: langue d'oc), the language spoken in the region before French became the general usage language.
Languedoc has been settled by the Greeks, Phoenicians and Romans, and invaded by the Alamanni, Vandals, Visigoths, and Saracens. Some parts of Languedoc have been part of the dominions of the kings of Aragon and the kings of Majorca; it did not come under French control until the 16th century.
