Brief guides to Herault attractions from Herault Tourisme

    THE PIC DE SAINT LOUP

Located to the north of the city of Montpellier in southern France, the Pic Saint Loup, offers a natural panoramic viewpoint with a great view over the Cévennes mountains and the Mediterranean.
Rising to an altitude of 658 m, the Pic Saint Loup (Saint Loup Peak) offers a marvellous panoramic view over the mountains and the sea.
This leisure area is perfect for walking and hiking, climbing, hang gliding and caving.

A surprising local architecture, against the backdrop of the garrigue (Mediterranean scrubland).

Resembling a giant shark fin, it has two distinct sides. The north face, which is extremely abrupt, earned it its name of pic or "peak". It resembles a cliff. The other, gentler slope looks out onto the plains, the vineyards and the Mediterranean.

    An outstanding view

To the west, admire the outstanding view across the village of Saint-Martin-de-Londres. To the east, further out you can see the ruins of Montferrand Castle. Sports lovers can run the peak from one end to the other!
This natural attraction is visible from far away, from the Promenade du Peyrou in Montpellier and even from the coast. The architect behind the coastal resort of Grande Motte, Jean Balladur, used it as a model for his Great Pyramid.

    An attractive leisure area

On the southern slope, a number of marked out trails will take you to the summit (a 2 to 3 hour walk). In places, these trails are either covered with woodland comprised of evergreen oaks, or totally exposed, featuring smooth layers of limestone or screes.
At the top, we find the Chapel of Saint Joseph in a leafy setting.
