Apparently this restaurant has just replaced the well known 'Del Sud'. La Table du Marche can be found 1 minutes walk from the Maison Carree in the centre of Nimes.
What actually resembles a rather small smart restaurant (shiny glasses, red stripy table runners and silver cutlery on dark wooden tables), opens out into a large courtyard housing 3 or 4 other restaurant terraces, all with modern furniture and brightly coloured trendy parasols.
A very nice atmosphere - the sound of running water in a corner and lots of candle-light.
We unfortunately arrived late (9.45pm) without a reservation on perhaps one of the worst nights of the year (a Nimes market night at the end of July: high season). We were greeted quickly and shown to our table and then left for a good 20 minutes - a plate of nibbles arrives (bread sticks, mussels, cheesy dip with celery and tomatoes) and an apology for the delay to come - but no drink offer at all.
35 minutes later we were given the menu chalk board - 3 starters, 3 main and 3 puddings and we made our choices - sticky ribs with olive oil mashed potato in a separate Le Creuzet dish (my main course) fresh sardines in marinade for other's starters - or rabbit terrine as another starter. Other main courses included aubergine cannelloni with the tomato sauce served again in a separate Le Creuzet.
Desserts: plum tart or pain perdu (French toast) with a lovely but unknown ice cream on the side.
3 courses Euro33 in the evening. Lunch menu 2 courses Euro23.
Wines all local and not too expensive... and tasted fab, once we'd got a bottle!
It was gone half past midnight when we finally escaped - it seemed an awfully long wait (probably to do with the lack of alcohol offered). It was refreshing to find a restaurant trying to do a few courses very well, instead of load of courses badly. Mixed feelings on it generally from the group eating. I have to say I couldn't really fault the food though.
Nothing offered for kids: no high chairs or kids menus.
