Pyrenees-Orientales is the most westerly and southerly Languedoc departement. To the west it is bordered by the Mediterranean sea whilst the southern border with Spain is the Pyrenees mountain range. Major towns are Perpignan, Argeles, Elne, Thuir and Prades. The main industries are tourism and farming. The area was controlled by the moors, followed by the Kingdom of Majorca and finally became part of France in 1740.
