I'm now able to better measure forum visitors. Roughly, the monthly stats for March were :
New topics posted 190
Topic replies 160
Topics opened (and read) 25,000
These figures will include many who logged on with the change of URL, and may not be regular visitors. 30 new members registered in March.
Merging the forum with The Languedoc Page (and good positioning on search engines) has resulted in a large growth in visitors. The monthly March stats for The Languedoc Page were :
Visitors : 32,000 (around 1000 per day)
Page Views : 130,000
Hits : 1,010,000
The 500,000th visitor was notched up in mid March. A measure of the growth is that 250,000 of those visitors were since April 2005.
From the start date in March 2002, there were only around 25000 visitors in the first 12 months (say 70 per day), and on the first day, we received 8 visitors !
This suggests that the annual figures for 2006 will be around :
Visitors : 300,000+
Page views 1,500,000+

The statistics are very impressive and deservedly so - this is a very informative site. The only thing I would like to see improve is the number of replies to posts. I am not referring to anything posted by me - this is a general comment. I have to say that, as a new member of the forum, I have felt discouraged at times by seeing the rather frequent 0 responses next to many postings. It has made me move to other forums, but I am back, hoping that more and more people will want to engage in conversation, imparting their valuable knowledge to others!

I agree 100%. We have always had a huge number of people reading the posts, but few replying. So people find the posts useful, but are shy?
There is also a theory that lurkers, become residents, contribute answers, then drift away. Could be true.
Do you have any ideas ?
If every poster introduced another member - would that help ? Or, do we need to change the basic concept ?
In fact, this board is more active than the other half dozen or so local boards. Maybe there are just not enough people in Languedoc to reach a critical mass ?
All ideas welcome.

I would think you would call me a 'lurker' -- I view all posts and visit the site on a regular daily basis. Anything with inforamation that would be useful to us for when we move to the Languedoc full-time in August is printed off and placed in a file for future reference. Because there is 0 replies for a lot of the postings does not mean they are not of interest but unless the lurker has information to exchange the only reply would be 'thanks'.
I find this forum most helpful and have made a number of postings asking for advice/help. I have been able to use the information for house/contents insurance, arranging pool safety measures, recommended routes and many more.
Thanks to everyone who posts such informative views. I am sure that I will continue to visit on a regular basis when in residence - (after obtaining a suitable system, so I will probably miss out for a couple of months).

Seems the hot topic is paint ! Over 450 views in less than a month. A view is counted every time the topic is opened.
Judging by the Aimoo stats, activity will grow until end June, then quieten until September.

That was an interesting topic. Followed that one and took Andrew and Emma's advice and made enquiries about Keim paints. About two days after I received a very detailed advertising brochure with all their products explained. No price details though and I assume from all the technical jargon that it would be major players in the building trade they are interested in and not individual homeowners.
I have to think about painting the outside of our house in Clermont plus the garden walls and terrace railings, so am still looking for either local advice to identify what paint has been used or possibly taking something suitable out with us in August. Walls have been partly done so it may be that I can match the paint locally to cover the remaining areas. Even if the paint is more expensive I will probably have to purchase less to complete the job.

I am afraid I cannot contribute in any useful way to the subject of paint, but I would like to get back to the more general question of the forum.
I think the good point of this forum is that when people write a reply to a question posted, it is usually because they have some useful information to share - the good thing is that you don't get much of the banter and general chit-chat that you get on other forums (don't get me wrong, that is fine too, but if you are looking for some concrete piece of information, all those one-liners and clever quips can get a bit annoying).
There are loads of members on this forum (close to a 1000?), so the level of replies should be higher, I feel, but maybe a lot of the members don't actually live in France, so don't feel well qualified to reply?! I am only guessing.
I wonder if it would be useful to add a topic on language on this forum? This would definitely interest me.
What do other people think?

The topic of Language is an excellent idea. There are links from this site to this subject which I have followed, but it would be very useful if people who are resident and are learning the language locally could recount their experiences and maybe give recommendations.
One of our French neighbours in Clermont used to teach English and as she is no longer working she has offered to teach us French. We are trying to persuade her to take on other students if her family commitments permit.
Looking back through previous postings there are quite a few comments on venues and tutors for French tuition in various areas, but yes, it would be useful to have all these under one heading.

I am glad that you like the idea of discussing the topic of Language - any comments from anyone else? If more people were interested in this and if the Administrator agreed, perhaps this category could be added?
Whatever happens, I will never stop being passionate about languages (especially French) but unfortunately I don't live in France full-time! This makes learning much more difficult. While I have no problem with reading French and have a wide vocabulary, speaking is a real challenge and I have a great problem with the language register, ie. what is acceptable in what context? Which phrases may be considered too informal, too infantile, too offensive in a given company? What has long gone out of fasion? (for instance, could "gronder" be used in relation to teenagers? Is the expression "etre b.c.b.g." still used or has it been replaced by something else?). I think there is great scope for such linguistic exchanges and advice on forums such as this.
I would certainly love to learn French by immersion in Languedoc, but this might have to wait a bit...

It is definitely an advantage to hear the up to date modern French.
My school French textbook had a dictionary at the back. The radio was la TSF (Transmission Sans Fils) and no mention of goss, merfs, mecs, etc.

there's even a brand of artisan crisps called something like that, but I can't remember it now, sorry!
As far as I can see, BCBGs only exist in Paris, not in les provinces , which is all we are down here in L-R.

Don't worry, linguistics is MUCH more interesting than statistics!
Right, gronder.
A child on the receiving end of a teacher's wrath might say "je me suis fait gronder par la maîtresse".
An ado would more likely say "ce con de prof m'a engueulé".
Another complaining verb used by older folk is "rouspéter", which is quite sweet, but my son would object most strongly if he heard me using it, because it's not cool. Like "en effet".

October was was the busiest month so far.
Total views (topics opened) : March 24991, April 31052, May 30598, June 28663, July 35282, August 38933, September 48594, October 49537

Based on the first 6 months of the new forum, annual topics viewed is running at around 410,000 per year. Just over 1100 per day. 1598 topics were viewed each day in October.

My posting in 'Accom wanted' attracted 226 views in just 3 weeks. I wonder if that was because of the heading 'Coming to France' rather than 'House wanted etc,' Either way, it was impressive and better still... it worked. Many thanks.

November had a high level of views. Google seems to be picking up more of the text in topics, which may be the reason. 40% of forum users arrived via google, and 27% via bookmarks in November.
