I've just spent a week in the Ariege. Lot's of wilderness. Rivers, forests, open spaces.
During the whole time i saw just two wild animals of the mammalian variety. A red squirrel in a tree and a badger dead by the roadside. All this despite spending hours out in the open and away from human habitations.
What a contrast with the Canadian Rockies where I went last year. Same kind of terrain but packed with wild animals. Come to think of it the UK has much more wildlife. if the road kills are any indication!
It all reminds me why I am opposed to the nearly unrestricted activities of those great preservers of our patrimoine - les chasseurs.
