SKY tv in a caravan etc

Postby Sandra » Tue May 15, 2012 2:59 pm

Hi has anyone ever used a portable satellite dish in the south, we are looking for one to use at our caravan and also I had a request for english TV from a client who is visiting a house down here for a month ( not able to instal sky permanently), so this may work for them.

I think that it has to be around 80cm.

hoping skyman will read this ...

Thanks, Sandra

yes a 80cm dish is the right size. A tripod/pole, with adjustable legs and a spirit level, that can be attached to the ground with a 'corkscrew' fixing would be a good idea due to the wind factor. i would also reccomend using a Sky box rather than any other make as the inbuilt stellite meter will help in the setting up along with a 'satbeeper' to actually find the satellite. a compass is essential, after a few goes i am sure it will become easier. a reasonable length of cable would be a good idea so the dish can be placed outside the shading affect of any trees etc. BTW the dish points at Astra2 approx 28.2 degrees East of South with an elevation of 34 degrees (here)
I hope this helps and would be happy to offer any further advice.

Sandra ...

This guy has quite a few tips: http://www.satelliteforcaravans.co.uk

The other way is to go and chat to the Brit yotties who are wintering down here and have a parabol on the deck.

it took me a while as 99% of the tripods don't have adjustable legs...but this is the type you need to cope with uneven ground.

its just a question of finding a supplier in UK / France!!!
heres another site about tripod

i found loads of fixed legs but it ismost important to be able to 'level' trhe tripod and of course 'tie it down'!! some sort of extending screws might work... and a 'dog tethering screw' and strong bungee.....
