Pruning ...............

Postby peter » Thu Feb 08, 2007 7:54 pm

The forum will soon be 1 year old.

I have the option to prune old, unanswered, posts.

Can anyone see a problem with pruning old unanswered posts over, say, 6 months old ? Or should it be over 12 months old ?

Of course I'll keep the links back to the archives.

The back ups are approaching 20mb.

Any views ?

How many go back to the archives ?

I have pruned the content by deleting all topics that have had no reply since 1 March 2006. Total deleted articles was 158.

Before pruning, I added an answer (to avoid pruning) to various posts that needed keeping, links to archives, etc. By keeping the links to archive information, a search here will find archive topic headings.

The database is now down to around 17mb.

Other benefits should be quicker searching, and inclusion of all topics on one subject page.

Did you use the Guyot or Cordon Royat method?

I've now pruned posts having no response since July 2006.

Around 200 topics out of 3000 have gone.

The db is now down to 17mb

HesfordJ : I used the quick and dirty method !

I've just had another tidy up. I've deleted all posts that have not had a reply in the last 700 days. More or less no reply since end 06.

This resulted in deletion of 844 posts included in 284 topics. A large number were in "What's on".

The back up is now 45 mb.

It is time to prune again. The data back up before pruning was 65mb with 58mb remaining afterwards.

The criteria is that items with no reply in the last 730 days have been pruned. So, items with no reply after 2 years are no more, except for those useful older posts that I've saved by posting the "to avoid pruning" message.

Time for the 6 monthly prune. The basis is that I delete threads that have had no response for over 2 years, after checking stickies, etc.

Pruning time again ...

Usual rules ..........

What's on ? items pruned when there has been no activity for 6 months
Useful info is not pruned
Others pruned if there has been no activity in the last 24 months approx

This 6 monthly prune resulted in the removal of :

Topics 530
Posts 2056

These items had been viewed 852,221 times.

The remaining topics have been viewed 2,462,054 times.

Pruning is intended to allow the forum to run faster, and to eliminate topics which are no longer active.

It is a tricky decision.
In theory, some of those posts can still be found by google and read by users, but 24month+ posts are probably of limited value.

Another go at reducing members.

I've pruned the remaining members who since 30 September 2006 have not
visited, posted, received/sent forum email, received/sent PM, or added a website link.

So, the members have been reduced by a further 125, giving a total of 699 since Feb 2006.

A backup has been made of the new forum which was around 69mb

Pruning slightly earlier this time to reduce the data prior to moving to later software.

Posts 1952

These items had been viewed 910,845 times.

The remaining topics have been viewed 2,451,865 times.

As part of the upgrade, I have more information regarding members. I've taken advantage of this analysis to prune 54 members who were either duplicated, used an invalid email address, or had not activated their account.

Currently, there are two accounts that have been disabled having both been used by l'outcast.
