There has been some call for a dedicated sports section.
I've noted previous discussions about F1, Rugby, Olympics, soccer and even cricket !
I'm happy to open a separate category if that is what people want.
Please vote in the poll ................. _________________ The Languedoc Page

Naturally USAP and The Dragons will figure highly.
Foot the only real team to be discussed is Olympique de Marseille.
No F1 Horrible Noisy and Polluting.
Table Tennis, Shove penny, Baby Foot and of course Shed Baiting.

No, no, no! All ball games, boxing and athletics should be automatically and permanently excluded, and the section should concentrate exclusively on Formula One, Horse-racing and Equestrianism (especially 3-day eventing).

There could be a section on where one can actually play sports/do gym/cycle etc. etc. instead of boring old watching other people play sports on TV - or even worse, watch F1. Yawn.

Yes, but please can we make it relevant to the L-R. I really don't want to have to wade through loads of stuff about Burnley's relegation struggle to find out how Marseille are doing in the CL or how USAP have fared in the Heineken.
BTW - Is anyone else going to Limerick to see the Munster - USAP game? What about the return match in Perpignan?
I'm afraid I lost interest in F1 when I sold my Scalextric at age 15. Did anyone see James May's recent Scalextric program on IPlayer? _________________ Jonathan

Yup! I thought it was great fun - best of series (tho' he's saving the trainset one until Xmas).
I live near Brooklands, I've walked the banking, my father in law raced motorcyles there before the war, and I love their old planes too.

Well Graham, in our little village alone there are umpteen football teams for the 8 yr olds to the much older; a velo club, walking club, umpteen gym classes - and petanque.
There are so many people walking around here that, when organising 25 friends walking, you have to check with other groups to make sure that the hills around St Chinian, or wherever, are not going to be clogged up.
The banks of the Canal du Midi have so many manic cyclists rushing about, that you have to watch out when you are walking to Le Somail, or wherever.
Cannot think why one would want to sit on one's b-- watching grossly overpaid, very boring young men racing round and round a track. They don't even overtake or crash anymore, which is why I thought people watched F1.

I enjoy watching F1 because it is something I could never do myself, although I used to drive around in a car which took part in the French Grand Prix a long time ago.
Like a lot of things it would not be interesting to anyone not wishing to understand the finer details.
Petanque we can all take part in so there is no need to sit and watch other people, the same for other ball games if you can still run about.
I think a sports section would have to be split as we would all have different interests. _________________ James |

I will leave the possible sports section to those of you who like watching it. I lived alone for 11 years in my twenties and never ever watched TV, let alone sport. I was playing hockey 3 times a week though, and swimming twice a week.
Nowadays, as an old lady, I merely go on three randonnees a week and do yoga.
For those of you who like to discuss sports, I think a sports section would be a good idea. Can it be clearly labelled Sport, and then I won't open it.

F1 is a very important key on my PC
It produces a synopsis of Internet Explorer.
As for team sports?
Ah well, team sports are better than open warfare,
though people still get maimed and killed both in
participating and "fanning" (the flames).
By the way, as we are in France, presumably the sports
section will concern itself exclusively with the French leagues??
We don't want to import British internal rivalries into France, do we??
Tennis, is OK - it's one against one.
Rock climbing and any other sport where one pits oneself
against oneself and against nature to survive are OK.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/8383082.stm
That's my lot on this thread otherwise ... off we go again!!

So, would that include eventing then, 66? Where you pit youself against a X-country course with (or on occasions -cf Bettina Hoy - against) your horse - you always have 2 elements of nature to overcome!

To Brian
Yes. I have started going to an art class some way away, and husband is getting v. bored while sitting in the car for two hours, whiling away the time with Michel Thomas. Therefore, I have finally been forced into driving. I have now driven 2 km x twice, as part of the journey. Gave up when hounded by French drivers on my backside. I do appreciate that 2 km x 2 is not-a-lot, but it's a start. I am like a completely new learner. Most embarrassing for an independant soul like me. I first tried to start off with my foot on the brake, and, as the car rocked gently, husband said "nearly", so we went off into fits of the giggles. Oh dear.

Well, good for you, Jen - it's a start.
You just have to build on that now - you have to learn to ignore the grenouilles on your tail (they'll get past at the first opportunity) and build your confidence untill you can put your foot down and roar off with insouciance.
Allez-y!

Back to sport.
Just watched MOTD. Good to see Burnley were true to form.
Anyone watch the more topical sport last night? The mighty All Blacks beating France quite soundly. The sheer speed and power of the NZ backs was frightening. I thought it was funny that Dan Carter could hardly speak a word of French after a whole season with USAP and also refused to swap his shirt for a blue one! _________________ Jonathan

French Grand Prix, or not !
The French Grand Prix looks set for an extended absence from the Formula One calendar after it was announced that plans to build a new track in the Yvelines region have been scrapped.
Earlier this year, French authorities outlined their plans to pursue the construction of circuit in Flins-Les-Mureaux, north west of Paris which would form part of a new industrial complex.
But while the industrial elements of the project are in full swing, plans to build a new track have been abandoned.
"Having consulted all the stakeholders in this case, I have decided in agreement with the elected county council to abandon the construction of the Formula 1 circuit," Alain Schmitz, president of the general council of Yvelines, said on Tuesday.
The French GP's only hope now seems to rest with the Paul Ricard circuit near Marseille, whose executives have previously stated their intention to bid for the race.
Source : www.planet-f1.com
The last French GP was held there in 1990. Since then, it has been developed into the Paul Ricard High Tech Test Track (Paul Ricard HTTT).
It was bought by Excelis, a company owned by Formula One promoter Bernie Ecclestone, in 1999.

F1 .........
Apparently Brawn is rumoured to have trousered £35 million when he sold his stake to Merc.
Nice work for a 12 month stint.
Rugby ............
I've nothing against Rugby per se....
However, it just doesn't stir any passion in me and judging by the relative popularity of the two sports I'm not alone.
I may be very wrong, but to me, one huge attraction about football is that I perceive it as totally classless - a bit like a VW Golf.
Again perception ..... but I see Rugby Union as primarily a sport for people called Olly and Julian, and they were both probably rubbish at football.
And the difference between Union and League = Two less thugs per side............ _________________

Perhaps once upon a time you could class-divide people by which sport they followed but it is getting more blurred.
I would much rather take my kids to a Rugby match than a Football match. Which says something about the fans.
Yes, there are plenty of Oliviers and Juliens down here who prefer Rugby to Soccer _________________ Jonathan

Looks like the British Grand Prix has been saved. It will take place at Silverstone next year after the circuit and Bernie Ecclestone finally reached agreement.
The news will be officially announced in central London next week ...................... _________________

Confirmation on British GP and Silverstone :
Silverstone saves British Grand Prix with new 17-year deal worth £227m
The British Grand Prix has been saved following a new deal agreed between Silverstone chiefs and Formula One commercial rights owner Bernie Ecclestone.
Silverstone Circuits Limited confirmed the 17-year deal, worth £11m a year, with an immediate £40m injection ahead of the 2010 Grand Prix at the Northamptonshire track.
It ensures the oldest race on the Formula One calendar retains its place in motor sport history, with Silverstone able to step into the breach following Donington Park's failure to meet its obligations.

Where on earth does this ridiculous amount of money come from? £40 million. Good grief: for driving round and round a track and not being able to overtake.
PS Peter, perhaps you should start up a Sports section, and then I won't ever open it, and make rude comments like this one!

Lateral thinking ............
1) There is no French GP scheduled
2) My village is near A9, 20 mins to TGV, 30 minutes to two airports
3) I wonder if a circuit would fit in my back garden ?

Just think - £40 mio would buy one top-ranked Premier League footballer.
If this were F1, he'd have nobody to play with (or against).
Bless.

That's the world we live in JSw, mega-talent can earn megabucks - whether you're a sportsman, a finance-trader, a broadcaster, a singer (excluding LCD talent-show winners), or whatever.
The rest of us who do not have (or can discover) our special talent have to do the best we can. We have to accept that we cannot provide as much as these people do to the needs of the mass of people, whether we think those demands are valuable and valid or not.
Nobody ever said life was fair.

Hi Brian
Well, I don't think that pushing a football around a field, or a car which a huge team have worked on round and round a track, or some ghastly singer miming her words, is a mega-talent.
I have taught footballers and good grief, were they dim. They were also sexist and some of them made really disgusting remarks to me.
The only reason, to my mind, that they earn so much nowadays is that it is tied in to TV and entertainment. It will be interesting to see what these people do when they are a little older.
People who work in the financial sector always earn a lot. In recent months, they have ruined many financial markets and are still greedy.
Most of the above have not got the skill or education that many of us have, and couldn't even attempt to do our jobs. They cannot string a sentence together for one thing. They are not interested in other people for another. However, in all this, I would rather have done a job that was very useful than these soppy non-jobs.
regards

Well it's all a question of perception - I don't have the talent to pilot an F1 car, or score a Premier League goal, or be Amy Winehouse (not that she mimes).
I agree that many of these people appear to be uneducated by our standards (and indeed probably are) but talents come in all shapes and sizes and, as ever, those who can catch the wind do very well.
You can obviously find satisfaction in your career, and indeed personal value therein, but so can they. The only difference is that they're rich, and whilst we may feel intellectually superior, that alone suggests that we are not any cleverer - because they can work the system in a way we can't.

Well, Brian in the middle of keying in these messages to this Forum, I am completing my lesson planning for the conversation class that I am giving, free of course, to my mates in the village on Wednesdays. This gives me much enjoyment and satisfaction, and the 'students' seem to be enjoying it too. Each Wednesday we laugh so much, and make such a racket, that husband cannot concentrate on his computer down in the garage and has to go out to escape.
We have enough money to enjoy the other 10 'interests' that we have down here, and I doubt that 'former' footballers, F1 drivers, Amy Winehouse (if she is alive at my great age) etc. could enjoy themselves, and laugh more than we do.
Thankfully, such idle rich, if they move to France, go to Provence and not down here and I don't have to mix with them.

Somebody told me recently that languedoc had lots of rich people and I have found the following info here.
http://www.journaldunet.com/economie/magazine/dossier/l-isf-dans-les-regions-francaises/languedoc-roussillon-5-995-redevables-a-l-isf.shtml
Languedoc is ranked 8th out of 26 for the number who pay 'riche tax'
There are 492 people in Beziers who earn over 790k euro (L'impôt de solidarité sur la fortune)
Maybe the footballers have arrived!
Jennifer I think that you are classing all 'footballers ' the same which is harsh, I know a couple of pro footballers and they are well educated, come from a lovely family and they both earn millions. It is like classing all brits who live here as being the same.
Sky has changed football from being a saturday afternoon day out, or all day if you watched the second team as well!
Peter can we have the sports section please this thread is getting too long for my screen! |

Sandra - isn't "la fortune" based on assets owned rather than income ?
It is still a tragedy that paying wealth tax is your reward for being prudent, saving money from your limited after tax net income, investing it, and then watching it's hypothetical unrealised value rocket due to govt policy induced inflation.
Paying tax on inflation is just as bad as paying tax on your after tax savings ?
Tax planning advice :
Blow the lot and aim to die at the age of 99, murdered by a jealous husband.

Hi Sandra
Well, you set me off investigating French Wealth Tax (ISF) which I had not given much thought to before now. Interesting seeing which parts of France are well off. Of course, Béziers may have 492 people paying it, but 50% of Bez. inhabitants are so poor that they don't pay tax at all.
Glad that you have two footballers who are lovely, but just try teaching the ones who are not. They are not, of course, at all interested in learning anything as they feel they will be so rich that they don't need it. And, they probably don't, unless they are injured. I still think that no human being whatever is worth being paid millions, and especialy for kicking a football or for being a banker etc.
As to Languedoc Roussillon, 7 years ago when we bought the house, it was the very good value here that was one of the attractions. It is certainly not cheap now, although a lovely place to live.
Well, could write on for forever, but just back from yoga which was a bit knackering.
PS really agree with you Peter, that one can be caught out by assets rising, although if you are living in them, it gives you nothing in the bank.

New F1 points system
A new points system will be introduced for the 2010 Formula One season that rewards the top ten finishers in a race.
The decision was made following a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council in Monaco on Friday.
The race winner will claim 25 points, the runner-up 20, third place 15, fourth place 10, fifth place will take eight, and then sixth to 10th would earn six, five, three, two and one point respectively.
"Due to the expanded grid of 13 teams, and further to the recommendation of the F1 Commission, a new points system will be in place for the 2010 season," read a statement issued by the FIA. _________________ The Languedoc Page

Mind you, what with no smoking, no booze, no burgers and bible-thumping - it almost sounds like death would be preferable. Thank God for Tiger Woods!

Well, we have just written our 6 page Xmas letter today, and it seems to be all about eating rather well: here, there and everywhere - certainly no burgers - perish the thought, and we are extremely anti fags. We have also cut out booze at home, as we are eating - and of course, drinking wine all over the place, virtually every day.
So a happy, or should I say, very happy, life down here for most people.
Those of you who are just thinking about it, should just get on down here and be done with it.

I was never ill until I gave up smoking.
Now seeing daylight in the mornings seems to be a bonus.
The local GP has currently got me on just 4 different medications - so in French terms I'm probably rather healthy.
Problem is every time I go he finds something else that is invariably fatal.

Glad to see on TLF that sport is not just about sport.
WRT highly paid people I have a theory that if that is what we truly want, we could all make a lot more money and it is just an admission of our failure to belittle those who do.
We all have abilities. The real key to success is to play to your strengths and let others play to theirs. Teachers may not earn what Premier league footballers do but I'm sure that every footballer, pop star, bond trader and actor remembers their best teacher. Being really good at what you do is more is more important than how much society rewards you in money.
Don't begrudge the big earners their spoils. With their skills you would do the same. Everyone who has paid for Sky, bought a CD, invested in an ISA or gone to the cinema has contributed to their wealth. You can always say no. _________________ Jonathan

The FIA have tweaked a number of rules ahead of next year's season.
Added to the adjustment of the testing ban to cater for mid-season replacements, the allowance for aerodynamic testing has been reduced from eight days to six. Teams will have the option of swapping any of those days for four hours of full-scale windtunnel testing.
Race garages, which had previously been allocated according to final position in the previous years' Constructor's Championship, will now be distributed on a race-by-race basis in order to ensure that working space is fairly distributed.
Drivers exceeding the maximum of eight engines per season twice in a single grand prix weekend will now face a ten-grid penalty for both the race weekend in which the restriction is breached and in the following grand prix.
With the 2010 field increasing to 26 cars, it has also been confirmed that during qualifying eight cars are eliminated in Q1 and Q2, rather than the five that were sidelined at the end of each session this year.

'The MERCEDES GP PETRONAS Formula One Team can confirm today that seven-times Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher will make his racing return in 2010 with the Silver Arrows team.
'With seven Drivers' World Championships, 248 Grand Prix starts, 91 victories, 154 podium finishes and 68 pole positions, the 40-year old German needs no introduction following an illustrious and record-breaking Formula One career from 1991 to 2006 at the Jordan, Benetton and Ferrari teams.
'Michael's return to racing with MERCEDES GP PETRONAS sees his return to Mercedes-Benz Motorsport where he began his racing apprenticeship as part of the Junior Programme in 1990, racing in Group C sports cars and DTM, and sees Michael renew his partnership with Ross Brawn with whom he won all seven of his World Championships.
'Today's announcement confirms the MERCEDES GP PETRONAS driver line-up for the 2010 season with Michael partnering his compatriot, 24 year old Nico Rosberg, in the Silver Arrows cars.

Former Renault team boss Flavio Briatore has won his appeal against his lifetime ban from motorsport.
The FIA handed the former Renault team principal the stringent suspension in September for his role in the 'crashgate' scandal.
The 59-year-old Italian took his case to the Tribunal de Grande Instance in Paris claiming the FIA did not have legal grounds to issue him with a wholesale ban.
Renault's former director of engineering, Pat Symonds, has also had his five-year suspension quashed by the TGI.
However, Briatore and Symonds have only received 15,000 and 5,000 euros apiece (£13,500 and £4,500) in damages after initially seeking one million and 500,000 euros (£900,000 and £450,000) respectively.
The FIA now have 15 days to pay the duo, otherwise they will be liable to a penalty of 10,000 euros (£9,000) per day.
According to French media, the judge presiding over the case is understood to have claimed the FIA's sanction "was illegal'.'
