The Festival of Lessons and Carols

L’ Eglise St. Hippolyte. Fontès, Herault
3pm. December 13 2009.

When you hear of Lessons and Carols, thoughts turn to Christmas and rightly so. But did you know that the structure of the Order of service - basically the same since its beginnings in 1870 – has more to say if you listen. The nine lessons and carols go beyond the familiar Gospel stories of the nativity. Like the windows of a medieval cathedral, together, they tell a tale of the loving purposes of God from the first days of creation, leading up to that Christmas day.

Now in its eighth year, this event marks a magical start to the Christmas season. Each year it continues to delight a growing number of people of all ages and nationalities from all over the Languedoc region and beyond, who come together to share the warmth and joy of the Christmas season. The village of Fontès offers the use of its beautiful church which resounds to the sounds of the organ accompanying the enthusiastic voices of the congregation as they sing traditional Christmas carols. At the end of the service there is always an abundant supply of home-made mince pies and wine, to be enjoyed by all. Everyone is welcome so, mark your diaries for this not-to-be- missed occasion.
