As part of the ongoing 50th anniversary celebrations, Paddy Hopkirk and Rauno Aaltonen take a MINI Convertible to Monte Carlo...

It is the BMW mini, which is not a real mini.

The real mini was designed to move people from 2 (or 3!) wheels to 4. I had one in the early 1970's.

The BMW mini was designed, and priced, to attract city trendies who had never had the original mini, but aspired to a BMW.

I think my wifes next car may be a BMW Mini Cooper, but she doesn't know yet !

Shame, but you can't blame them. At their age Hopkirk and Aaltonen would probably not enjoy curling themselves into an original Mini and bouncing their way across Europe! I would certainly not enjoy it.

At least the Bimmer version has a bit more space, comfort and oomph!

Many of the rally drivers of the 60's & 70's now suffer from back problems, arthritis, etc.

Not surprised, Peter, we all start cracking up sooner or later and early damage shows up first, whether you are a rally-driver, rugby-player, golfer, or whatever. I know that having spent much of my youth employing my right arm to lift a glass, it now gets increasingly hard to do so, unless there's something worthwhile in the glass!
