I read with interest the problems people have recorded in 2007 conerning eye tests and glasses, as I have had a similar problem of the incorrect recording of a test on the prescription. The glasses made up by the French optician were so far out the one eye was totally blurred. She advised me to go to another opthalmo and have another test, rather than risk an altercation with the offending opthalmo.
I did not take the glasses as they were useless to me, but she assured me there was no problem as they are insured for this sort of thing for a period of 3 months. So I will not have to pay for them until they are right. She thinks that the opthalmo transposed part of the prescription from the left to right eye.
I've also investigated getting glasses from the internet again having tried before and finding that they would not do such strong lenses. I've now found one that seems to be more flexible. http://www.glassescrafter.co.uk/Product/en-US/List/0001.aspx?Currency=GBP
Has anyone used them before?
I also have a query about the way the presciptions are written here. Someone told me that in France the eyes are transposed in so far as the opthalmo lists the eye on his right as the right eye and not the person's right eye. This seems to be crazy to me and I wonder if this is correct? |

| I have recently had to renew my licence with dvla and had all the relevant medicals etc done here in France. I have had the renewal refused due to my eyesight being below the required level. Although I wear contacts, my eyesight is not that bad.DVLA have kindly granted me an extension so that I can have an eyetest done in the UK at christmas. I have no idea what the difference is, but there must be one I guess. I got my contacts in France after an eyetest here so the prescription couldn't have been wrong, just different I guess. |

I did not know that the DVLA would accept a French medical test for an English driving licence. Is your licence registered to an English address?I have to have a medical to renew my licence to drive catagory C1 for a 4 ton motor home.Being 76 I thought I had to return to GB for a medical to renew.I was considering getting a French licence with the medical to avoid going back. _________________ ps |

Hi, Yes the medical form states that it will accept any EU registered doctor. As I understand it, only certain doctors in France are authorised to do driving medicals for French licences, so it may be necessary to use one of those. I didn't know that at the time but my doctor in France just happens to be able to do such medicals so I was lucky. I did have to translate various bits for him but most of the medical terms are fairly international. I do have a UK address too so that works for DVLA.
Just make sure that they use the correct eye test standard. It is shown on the form (can't remember the name of it) but in my ignorance, I assumed that the same one would be used here automatically.
My medical was for an HGV renewal so it is probably the same as yours. Also it cost 22 euro rather than the amazing UK fees. |

Thanks for that information.I have a list of the French doctors able to do the test ,from the application form for a French licence. In Britain it cost me £125.!I still cannot make up my mind to change to a French licence as it is apparently given for life, whereas the DVLA require it to be renewed every 3 years. Hi
I have used several internet sites to buy Glasses, the one to avoid in my mind is Glasses4you no forward address to return faulty glasses.
I have been using glasses2you Ltd which is based in Southampton with telephone number and a address which I have used along with their web site with no problems. I cannot praise them enough
