A map of the planned TGV routes is here :
www.rff.fr/biblio_pdf/np_ln_lrou_carte.pdf

Note that Perpignan - Montpellier is scheduled for "improvement" only, at a cost of Euro 90m.

An article about the meeting of the two teams in the Pyrenees tunnel :
http://fr.biz.yahoo.com/23112007/5/percement-du-tunnel-de-la-premiere-ligne-ferroviaire-grande-vitesse.html

The article also confirms that the whole Nimes - Barcelona stretch will not be finished before 2020.

Latest news this week was an announcement that government policy was to expand and accelerate TGV development. Of interest to us was :

1)Complete the west coast Tours - Bordeaux section
2)Build Bordeaux - Spain route
3)Build a Bordeaux - Toulouse route
4)Build a Toulouse - Narbonne route
5)Complete the Nimes to Barcelona route

Some of these may be very long term ambitions !

Montpellier - Perpignan improvement now scheduled for (horizon !) 2012.

Nimes - Montpellier TGV forecast completion is 2013.

More info : www.rff.fr/pages/projets/fiche_projet.asp?code=307

The govt plans for accelerated rail development, announced in February, seem to have hit the buffers ................ unless others know better.

From www.railwaygazette.com :

RFF seeks Nîmes – Montpellier offers
30 Sep 2008

FRANCE: RFF has released a request for expressions of interest in the construction and management, through a public-private partnership, of the Nîmes – Montpellier bypass.

The 70 km bypass follows a new alignment to connect the existing TGV Méditerranée route with the high speed line currently being built from Barcelona towards Perpignan, which will provide a standard gauge connection into Spain. The start of bidding follows the signing of a protocol between RFF and local authorities in Languedoc-Roussillon in June over the financing of the project.

In addition to carrying high speed passenger services, RFF sees the line as a strategic freight artery to carry trains away from the urban areas around both cities, and offering an important boost to capacity for east-west transit traffic along European Corridor D, which runs from Valence to Budapest via Torino. The project is also in keeping with the French government’s targets on sustainable development, as outlined in its environmental Grenelle, according to the infrastructure manager.

SNCF have announced that they are considering the closure of the Nimes - Clermont Ferrand rail line for passenger traffic.

Politicians from the regions involved have met to prepare their defence of this action.

Not rail, but connected !

Canal du Rhône à Sète (which is part of the Canal du Midi Bordeaux to Rhone route) has been carrying much increased freight traffic in recent years.

As part of a plan to reduce road freight traffic, there is now a plan to improve the capacity of the canal.

Essentially the improvements will allow bigger boats and faster transit time through locks by 2013.

Midi Libre says ( www.midilibre.com/articles/2008/11/23/20081123-FAIT-DU-JOUR-4-La-Region-investit-30-M.php5 ) :

From : www.la-clau.net/info/douche-froide-le-tgv-perpignan-barcelone-pas-avant-2015-1396

Completion of the Perpignan - Barcelona route is now forecast to be 2015.

It was previously forecast as 2009, then 2011, then delayed to 2012 because of problems within Barcelona city.

I came across this :

A rail speed record was established on May 26 2001 during a special non-stop Calais - Marseille run of 1067·2 km in 3h 30min, including a mean speed of 317 km/h over a measured 1000 km.

Could we expect, say, 4hrs direct to the channel tunnel entrance (so 5hr from London) one day ?

Things are moving ................ perhaps :

On May 11 RFF Presidert Hubert du Mesnil announced that three consortia had been shortlisted for construction of the Contournement Nîmes - Montpellier, which will form the first stage of the connection between TGV Méditerranée and the Perpignan - Figueras cross-border link into Spain.

Reported in the Midi Libre today .............

Starting in December 2009, SNCF has increased the number of trains and the number of stops on its services out of Nimes in peak hours. The intention is improvement of services for commuters into Nimes.

Lunel, Vergèze, Manduel and Nozieres will benefit from more services.

There are also plans to reopen the stations of Pont-Saint-Esprit, Bagnols, L’Ardoise, Roquemaure, Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, Aramon, Remoulins et Marguerittes and develop the Rhone services.

The extension of dedicated TGV track from East of Nimes to Montpellier has reached the next stage.

Funding has been agreed, and the specification has been put out to tender.

The Midi Libre reports :

Some date changes for the dedicated TGV tracks -

Perpignan - Figueras is delayed until 2010

Perpignan - Barcelona brought forward to 2012

Perpignan - Montpellier ( and therefore Montpellier - Barcelona) remains as 2020

Confirmation of Perpignan - Barcelona opening as 2012 :
